The airport was moved from its original location at the site of what is now the Perry County Central High School / Perry County Park to its present location near the Perry county, Breathitt County border. The nearly 500 acre facility is situated along KY 15 North approximately 8 miles north of Hazard.
The airport identifier K20, consist of two runways. Runway 14/32, a 5,500 foot x 100 foot wide, with MIRL, REIL lighting and PAPI approach lighting. Threshold elevation of runway is 1242.9 and threshold elevation of runway 32 is 1252.6. Lighting can be accessed by Radio, 122.7. Runway approach to 14 is by GPS, VOR/DME. Design of runway 14/32 is B-II. Ultimate design for th runway will be to increase it's length to 7,000 feet with 1,000 foot overrun on both ends. Design designation will be c-II and the design aircraft a Gulfstream III. There is a VOR / DME located on the field. Application has been made to FAA for an instrument approach ILS with preliminary study funding approved by the Congress.
Runway 6/ 24 is a 60 foot wide x 3,250 foot in length is primarily use by smaller, Cessna 172 lass aircraft.
Adequate airplane parking with tie downs is available at the terminal. Av Gas and jet A Fuel are both available at the facility. There are presently over 30 aircraft based at the airport including a full time Medi Vac helicopter. Over the past three year the Airport Board, with the assistance of the State of Kentucky and the FAA have spent over $7 million dollars extending the runway to its present length, a new parallel taxiway, a security fence around the entire 475 plus acres, additional airplane apron space and other additions to the airport.
